Valley of the Vines Trail: Why is it the best trail in New Zealand?

Start Your Day in Arrowtown

Begin with a quick 20-minute shuttle from Queenstown to Arrowtown, New Zealand’s most picturesque gold-mining town. Frozen in time, this place feels like a classic old Western gun-slinging village, complete with preserved 1800s architecture and tree-lined streets. The 1876 gold rush put Arrowtown on the map, and today it's a must-do for visitors who want a glimpse into NZ’s colourful past.

Grab a top-notch coffee or hearty breakfast at local favourites like The Dishery, Provisions, Fork and Tap, or AB Bakeries before starting your ride.

Ride Essentials with Going Blue

We’ll get you set up with:

  • A high-quality Giant Talon or Trek Powerfly 4 e-bike (or a Trek Marlin 6 pedal bike if you want a workout)
  • Helmet, lock, custom map, and text support
  • A 10–15 min orientation to make sure you’re comfy and confident on the trail

Our e-bikes make hills a breeze and are ideal for all levels of fitness. Baby trailers and tag-alongs are available for families with young riders.

Easy Trail, Big Views

At around 22 km, the ride takes 2–3 hours depending on how many stops you make. Expect crystal-clear rivers, native bush, open farmland, and the odd sheep or Llama keeping you company. You’ll cross seven bridges, some spanning 80 metres, and glide past towering rock faces and valley floors basking in the sun.

The trail is easy to follow and well signposted. We rate it:

  • Difficulty: 2/5 on an e-bike
  • Up to 3/5 on a pedal bike – there are a few short climbs to keep you honest

Optional Bungy Jump – Historic Kawarau Bridge

Want to spice up your ride? Stop at the Kawarau Bridge Bungy, the world’s first commercial bungy jump, for a thrill. Book your jump between 12–1pm and take a leap off the iconic bridge (or just watch the brave ones bounce). It’s right on the trail – no detour required.

Wine, Wildlife & Scenic Stops

Expect to see more than just vineyards. There are animal paddocks along the way, often with goats, llamas, or sheep eager to say hello. Snap a few pics, take a breather, and soak in those panoramic mountain views.

The Gibbston Wine region is home to some of Central Otago’s best Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris producers. Stop in at as many cellar doors as you like – it's a self-guided wine tour, so you're free to sip and cycle at your own pace.

End with a Wine & We’ll Pick You Up

Finish up at your favourite winery in Gibbston. Text or WhatsApp us by 3pm with your location and we’ll collect you at 4pm for a comfortable ride back to Queenstown. You’ll be back in town by 5pm – no stress, no rush.
