FAQ

Where do the hires and self guided tours start and end/where do I collect my rental?

We will drop the rentals direct to your accommodation or arrange to meet you in town at the Speights Ale House (50 Stanley Street) in central Queenstown. You’ll find a description of where to find this as well as a map of our location here.

Our self-guided tours end at the location you have chosen. We will clearly explain the pickup time and place when we get you ready for your trip, and you will have our cell phone number to call at any time if you need us.

For returning your rentals, we can either pick your bikes up from your accommodation or you can drop them off centrally at the Pig and Whistle Bar (41 Ballarat Street) in the middle of Queenstown. Look for the sign outside the bar that says ‘Going Blue Drop off Point’ and when you’re done simply chain your bike and helmet to the bike rack and walk away! Just ask the staff inside if you can’t find it and they will be happy to help.

The area is all under video camera, so there is no need to worry about the safety of the bikes.

Is an electric bicycle and cruISer bike hire the best way to explore the Queenstown area?

100% YES!

Queenstown and the surrounding area is full of hidden spots, beautiful trails, history, LOTR scenery and the list goes on. If you were to take a scenic van trip or even a helicopter flight, you would not get close to what you can see exploring by bike. With miles of dedicated cycle tracks, as well as a few cheeky detours, you have real freedom to explore as you like!

If you are heading out towards Arrowtown and the famous Gibbston wine area, in particular, expect to come across some hills. If you’d rather not work up a sweat, one of our electric bikes will solve that problem! They flatten the hills and allow you to spend your time enjoying everything there is to see and hear, rather than struggling along with sore legs. You’re still earning that coffee break or wine tasting stop!

Can I pay cash on the day of the tour or rental?

We have limited capacity, so we tend to fill up fast. We strongly recommend that you book your explorer tour or rental via the online booking system on our website – simply click on Book Now Payment (by credit card – Mastercard or Visa) needs to be made at the time of booking, to secure your place on the self explorer tours or for your rental.

We also can take cash and credit card payments (Mastercard or Visa) in our van, for last-minute rentals and self explorer trips.

If I haven’t ridden a bike in years does it matter? What level of fitness do I need?

Electric bikes are amazing. They allow people with all levels of fitness to enjoy cycling and the benefits of being outdoors without being as fit as you may think. You can ride them at a leisurely pace, then the motor on your electric bike will help you glide uphill without you even noticing – there is the odd exception when the some of the tracks do get steeper (there are only a handful in the area like this) where you’ll still have to help your eBike out a little and push on the pedals! You can vary the level of power assistance, so you can make your ride as hard or as easy/relaxed as you wish.

Our e-Bikes are brand new 2020 models with the latest in rider comfort and safety, as well as being very stable and straightforward to operate. Oh and not to mention- great fun! We will take time at the start of any hire or self-guided tour to explain how the bikes work and to do a practice ride with you when we drop your gear off, to make sure you are 100% comfortable on the bike before you set out.

If you have any other questions or concerns about whether you will be ok on the electric bike (either in a tour or during a rental), please feel free to call or email us and we will be happy to help.

Going Blue’s cancellation policy?

If you cancel within 48 hours of scheduled departure time for a self-guided trip or rental, no refund is possible.

Cancellation should be by email to [email protected] or please call or text on 027 746 2583.

We have limited space for riders on our self guided trips and rentals and want to make sure that no one misses out.

Occasionally we will come up against a challenge – be it extreme weather conditions, safety concerns, or any other crazy events or circumstances that, in our opinion, prevent operating from either our end or yours. If we cancel for these reasons, you will receive a full refund within 5 calendar days of the date of cancellation by us.

What if I’m running late?

We try to run very much like Air New Zealand – on time, every time.

If you are renting one of our bikes, we do drop most of the bikes direct to our customers. We will stay in constant communication via the email or contact number you have given us as to where we are etc. – if you are running late just let us know and we will try to change things around to make it work.

We just want you to have a great experience while in Queenstown.

If you are on the self-guided tour, it is hard for us to delay the departure of our trips if you are running late. Once again just let us know and we will do all we can to try and make it work with you and the other guests we have booked on. We’re a small team but will do our best all of the time to provide the best service to every one of our guests.

If you are late (or think you might be), please call 027 746 2583. We might be able to reschedule you on a later tour or rental period, but that will be subject to availability.

Please note, no refunds are available if you miss your tour or rental due to being late for any reason.

What do you provide for my tour or rental?

We provide you with the best brand, new explorer/rental electric bikes in Queenstown.

We provide: a helmet (a legal requirement in New Zealand to wear whilst riding, and with the number of sheep on the roads these days isn’t a bad idea!); a bike lock for each bike + a pump and repair kit per group.

We have a few bags you’re welcome to take with you if you need one also.

What should I wear/bring with me?

It’s a great idea to bring your rain jacket, a bottle of water, sunscreen, etc.

You can wear your ‘every-day’ clothes on our bikes. If you really want to wear tight-fitting lycra, a mankini or bikini sportswear you are welcome…. be warned, one of our team may want a photo of you for our Facebook pages before you go if that’s ok.

We suggest you dress appropriately for the weather. The climate can be extreme in the mountain areas, so something warm is a great idea.  You should wear something on your feet that will be secure as you ride (closed-toe shoes are best) – so no jandals, thongs or clogs.  Sunglasses are recommended all year round.

During the cooler months (e.g. from June to September), a pair of gloves is often a good idea – they will help with potential windchill on your hands as you’re riding around the area.

To check what the weather is likely to be on the day of your tour, and therefore to dress appropriately, we suggest you take a look at: http://m.metservice.com/towns-cities/queenstown

And finally, we also suggest you bring along some cash or a bank/credit card for drinks and food. This being Queenstown, you are sure to come across restaurants, bars or sheep stalls along the way, and what better way to reward yourself for a day’s cycling!

Does your bike shuttle/pickup service pick anyone up with other bikes?

Yes – wherever you have hired your bike from, or if it’s your own, just contact us on 027 746 2583 and we can arrange to pick you and your group up from any location at any time of the day or night with your bikes.

Can you store my bags while I’m out on tour or riding my rental?
Yes – we’ll be happy to hold your small bags/extra gear or even suitcases safe and secure at our office or in our locked van all-day.
Can I bring my kids/what is the minimum age of rider?

We do have a small range of kids bikes available to hire so, please contact us directly with the age and sizes of the kids on 021 225 2766 or [email protected].

We actually have kids ourselves so love to see them out and about and off their iPads – we will do whatever it takes to try and accommodate your loved ones and help to get them outdoors

All kids are allowed on our self guided experiences or hires – Just remember self-guided means you are in control and responsible for your trip, your safety and your kids

Please take care out there.

Are there any weight, height or age restrictions?

If your children are under 14 years old, please contact us and we can discuss the best options for you.

In terms of height – our bikes are very adjustable, so we can accommodate a wide range of heights.

Our electric bikes are designed with a maximum weight capacity of 252 pounds (114 kg).

We don’t have an age limit, but please be aware that electric bikes are a bit heavier than conventional bikes. The components that deliver all the fun (the motor, the battery etc.) do add some weight to the bike. That added weight isn’t an issue when you’re in motion – in fact, the motor does most of the work for you! However, you will need to be comfortable handling a sturdy bike.
